winters bone requires you to understand the rules of the place it is set in which is in the Ozark mountain in a small community where illegal methamphetamine trade flourishes. without this knowledge it can be hard for a passive viewer to understand due to it needing an active viewing to be properly understood. this could be due to the low budget of two million dollars preventing it from having all the big car chases and explosions like mainstream movies making it very dull and realistic which the director Debra Granik was aiming for with long takes and a lot of establishing shots to adds to the verisimilitude of the film. the movie opens up with an establishing shot of the landscape to how the audience the setting in which winters bone takes place with a mix of diegetic and non diegetic sound with the rain and a local band called the "Maribeth Sisco and Blackberry Winter" singing over multiple shots of the landscape and the main protagonist "Ree" and her two siblings doing natural things which include the two siblings messing around and Ree doing the chores showing how its not all action and fantasy but is realistic to the point where it could push the audience away due to it needing to have active viewing instead of passive to follow the story because of the low budget limiting what goes on within the story resulting in a lot of long one takes. Winters Bone also relies heavily on the audience to have an understanding of the social context due it taking until the end of the movie to understand the plot which still leaves most people confused about some aspects which could be possibly due to the spectatorship of the viewer due to it needing an active viewing all the way through the movie because if you have a passive viewing you will not get the plot due to missing out the key plot points. you also need to know the context so the story makes sense because without knowing context you wouldn't understand that Ree's Mother is unable to look after herself leading to Ree having to look after her two siblings full time and doing house work and chores and the lack of Father figure due to him cooking meth and dealing meth.
