La La Land - Sebs Life

discuss how important cinematography is in establishing strong responses from spectators to a key character in 'La La Land'. your answer must refer to 1 scene in detail.

Cinematography is important to the story of La La Land due to it being able to portray the story of the characters and their emotions throughout the story. For example, the first interaction with Seb has more verisimilitude due to the more realistic colour scheme with minimalistic clothing and natural lighting compared to Mia where her scenes have a lot more colour and life to them with like bright coloured clothing showing her optimism whereas Seb has a more realistic view on things due to already being screwed over in the past. the scene of Seb and his sister is taken all in one shot. this makes the scene more verisimilitude and easy to follow due to it being less colourful and exciting due to them telling you the story rather than doing it through song. this also shows us how Seb has a more realistic view on his situation and aspirations compared to Mia having a more optimistic view of her situation and aspirations. the use of cinematography shows the audience this though the scenes being much slower paced with Seb while Mia's scenes are a lot faster paced. This change in pace could result in peoples spectatorship to change due to the audience needing more of an active viewing in Seb's scenes while you only need to have a passive viewing to watch Mia's scenes. the cinematography also shows us Seb's living environment which shows it to be still all packed away showing us how he is still trying to keep to reach his aspirations even after being screwed over showing the audience that Seb still believes in his dream but with a more realistic view shown by his low self-esteem towards it and his lack of confidence. Seb's apartment in this scene is shown as dull and lifeless due to its lack of colour showing Seb's emotions at this point of time compared to later in the film where a green coloured light is coming through the window when he is with Mia showing there change in character and personality when together.
